What Is Accelerated Reader?
The Accelerated Reader (AR) program is a reading initiative designed to promote literacy and foster a love of reading among students of all ages. Through the program, students choose from a vast selection of books that match their reading level and interests. After reading, they take an online quiz to test their comprehension. Based on their performance, students earn points that contribute to their overall reading goals. This interactive system encourages students to read more, develop better comprehension skills, and track their progress in a fun and engaging way.
One of the key benefits of the Accelerated Reader program is its personalized approach to reading. Each student takes a placement test that determines their optimal reading level, ensuring that they are challenged without being overwhelmed. Teachers and educators can use this data to set individual reading goals for students, monitor their progress, and provide targeted support where needed. The program also offers detailed reports, helping educators and parents track both reading habits and comprehension skills over time.
In addition to enhancing reading skills, the AR program cultivates a lifelong passion for books. By giving students the autonomy to select their own reading material, it fosters a sense of independence and ownership over their learning. Whether students are just beginning their reading journey or are seasoned book lovers, the AR program helps instill confidence, improve literacy, and prepare them for future academic success. With thousands of books to choose from, there’s something for every reader, ensuring that the joy of reading is accessible to all.
Locally in SNSD, Accelerated Reader is a computer-based program that Smackover Elementary teachers use to monitor reading practice and progress of their students. AR helps our teachers guide students to books that are in line with the kids’ individual reading levels. Students take short quizzes after reading a book to check for understanding.
