Early Childhood Education

Early Childhood EducationThe Smackover-Norphlet School District Preschool accepts babies who are six-weeks old to Pre-Kindergarten age. Activities are planned around each child’s individual needs, abilities and interests.

Early childhood education plays a critical role in a student's development by laying the foundation for future academic and social success. During the early years, children's brains are highly receptive to learning, making this a crucial period for cognitive, language, and emotional growth. High-quality early childhood education provides children with structured environments where they can develop essential skills like problem-solving, communication, and cooperation. These early experiences help shape a child’s approach to learning, fostering curiosity, creativity, and a love for discovery that can last a lifetime.

Beyond academic skills, early childhood education promotes social and emotional development, which is equally important for a child’s long-term success. In early learning environments, children learn how to interact with peers, build relationships, and manage emotions in healthy ways. These skills are foundational for navigating future challenges in both school and life.

Early childhood education is essential for closing opportunity gaps that may exist before children enter formal schooling. Research shows that children from disadvantaged backgrounds benefit the most from high-quality early education, as it can help mitigate the effects of poverty and other adverse conditions. By providing equitable access to early education, schools can help ensure that all children, regardless of their background, start school on a more equal footing. This not only benefits individual students but also strengthens communities by fostering a generation of learners who are better prepared to contribute to society.

Because children learn through use of their senses and by movement, it may not look like “school” to adults! But, our teachers use play experiences to help children learn basic skills and concepts that will prepare them for Kindergarten. Activities encourage exploration, creativity, and problem solving, and our staff works with children to enhance their learning and development in all areas, including social/emotional, physical, language/literacy, and intellectual.

The SNSD Preschool ABC program uses Creative Curriculum and Adventures in Learning to guide their planning.
