Dual Credit Opportunities

Dual Credit Opportunities

Bernadette OGuinn

Concurrent enrollment classes, also known as dual enrollment or dual credit classes, are programs that allow high school students to take college-level courses while still in high school. These classes provide students with the opportunity to earn both high school and college credit simultaneously.  Smackover High School  offers these types of classes for students in grades 9-12, which can be a valuable educational opportunity for students looking to get a head start on their college education or explore advanced coursework. Currently over 100 students are enrolled in dual credit courses through South Arkansas College at Smackover High School.

Students enjoy many benefits of concurrent enrollment:

  • College Credit: Students can earn college credit for courses taken in high school, potentially saving time and money on future college tuition.
  • Academic Challenge: These classes often offer more rigorous coursework, allowing students to challenge themselves and prepare for the academic demands of college.
  • Exploration: Students can explore their academic interests and potential college majors by taking courses in various subjects.
  • Transition to College: Concurrent enrollment can ease the transition from high school to college by exposing students to college-level expectations and coursework.
  • Flexibility: It offers flexibility for students who want to balance their high school studies with college-level courses.
  • Cost Savings: Earning college credit in high school can significantly reduce the overall cost of a college education.

It's essential for students and their families to carefully consider their options and discuss the potential benefits and challenges of concurrent enrollment with school counselors or advisors to make informed decisions about participating in these programs. Additionally, the specific classes and requirements for concurrent enrollment can vary from one school to another, so students should check with Smackover High School for details about their program and available courses.

Students at Smackover High School can also take classes at the Secondary Technical Center which provides students with the opportunity to earn certificates in various technical and vocational fields. These certificates can prepare students for careers immediately after high school or provide a head start on specialized training for their chosen professions. The areas of certification include welding, automotive, criminal justice, health science, industrial technology, process technology and practical nursing.

These options provide a well-rounded educational experience for students, allowing them to choose pathways that align with their interests and career goals. It's essential for students to work closely with school counselors or advisors to plan their course of study and ensure they are meeting the requirements for their chosen programs and certificates. Overall, this type of program offers valuable opportunities for our students to excel academically and gain practical skills for their future care.
